Completely agree with you...
...best definition of The West Ham Way....if only we'd had forward thinking owners like Man U...we'd have been established as a Top 4 Club...years ago...
" But his ignorance is that he did not think to ask a supporter of West Ham that understood the history dating back to Malcolm Allison, Noel Catwell, Dave Sexton, Frank O'Farrell, Bobby Moore etc... and the chats in the cafe in the 50s and later on the influence of the Hungarians of the 50s on Ron Greenwood, John Lyall and the staff at West Ham. That I think, in essnce is the base for the West Ham way, a philosophy based on pass and move, great skill and technique.
What Fergie as Big Sam fail to realise is that because we were never backed financially by the owners, it was hard to get a team to play successfully that way for a sustained period. We did develop a lot of teh talent in our Academy also part of teh West Ham way and now being recognised again at all cluns...."

Playing as we did, we always had a better chance against better teams who would have a go at us. We often struggled against negative teams that parked the bus. Hence why we could beat Man U one week, and then lose to relegation fodder the next.

Well said...excellent post.
Would also add that Ferguson's comments, whilst understandable as he's standing up for a mate, aren't representative of what he himself was as a manager. Football, particularly now due to the increase in cost, is an entertainments as opposed to a results business. Ferguson's sides were always watchable to a neutral because they played attractive football.
The main problem all of us have had with Allardyce isn't his personality (even though that adds to it) its simply having to watch defenders missing out the midfield, pumping long diagonal balls. Its fucking dire to watch and when it costs as much as it does, is a bit of an insult. The FACT that even during the 90's - when we stopped Ferguson winning the title TWICE - with players like Ian Bishop, John Moncur, Michael Hughes etc shows exactly what the West Ham Way was. It meant that on our day we could match anyone by playing passing football on the ground. We were never like fucking Wimbledon or Bolton upsetting the big teams were we?! We can beat the big teams on their terms.

Massively. Came out with the players are cheats business and all that crap. Forgetting that Man Utd had slipped up several times prior to this game making it closer with Blackburn than it should have been.
It got under his skin very badly and he hated us for it ever since. And I still think he gets ruffled about it today.

Yes, mate. Well said.
By far the greatest benefit of getting Allardyce in was the very fact he was everything we weren't. Tough and hard in defence and attack, mostly defence.
While we were still trying, and more often than not managing, to play the good stuff under Lyall, there were many occasions when I, and I'm sure many others, wished we weren't quite so lightweight when it came to a physical match against the likes of the northern bullies you mentioned. But we usually accepted things as they were and settled for saying things like "At least we try to play the game the right way." As a diehard romantic, I always and still believe in this.
After the last relegation, I was ready for Allardyce because that was the fifth relegation in my time and I'd had enough. I knew Sam would toughen us up, and I always hoped he would develop the attacking side of things once we were well disciplined defensively.
There are now signs that my hoped are coming true. We'll see if we continue in the right direction.
But the fact is, we needed this brabd new "way," which is first things first = DEFENCE, and not fucking about in your own half if there is not a good short option on.....and THEN build the more attractive side of things on top of the foundation of the solid defence. For all our noble and artistic and historic way of doing things, it all needs the *Allardyce element to make it complete.
THAT is what the new West Ham Way should be. Just what it was, with the slight addition of what it lacked.
*It needed him to add it, but that doesn't neccessarily need it needs him to continue it, but I would sooner bank on him continuing it for the next 2 or 3 years than anyone else, simply because we don't have the kind of boat that should be rocked right now. 2 or 3 years as long as everything doesn't go pearshaped in the meantime.

Absolutely well said, sir!
There is such a thing as The West Ham way. It just wasn't very successful. And as you say for Ferguson to say The West Ham was a myth is despiciably arrogant or utterly ignorant.
Not sure why he felt the need to say this. But I would guess having woken from a whisky soaked slumber he had a flash back to when we stopped them winning the league and Blackburn won it. He can't forget it, never forgave us and never will.
Cunt.

I wondered if anyone else was aware of that. I heard that he had a lot of time for Lyall. He read a tribute to him at his funeral service in 2006.
Great thread title though, but I think his comments are to back his mate, and probably date back to last season.

Hmmm...
Fergie displaying both arrogance and ignorance in equal measure.
He is understandably motivated by his friendship with BFS and that#s something we might all do, support a mate etc...
His arrogance is that he knows people listen to him as an authority on anything football related regardless of teh facts. We love a winner it seems :)
But his ignorance is that he did not think to ask a supporter of West Ham that understood the history dating back to Malcolm Allison, Noel Catwell, Dave Sexton, Frank O'Farrell, Bobby Moore etc... and the chats in the cafe in the 50s and later on the influence of the Hungarians of the 50s on Ron Greenwood, John Lyall and the staff at West Ham. That I think, in essnce is the base for the West Ham way, a philosophy based on pass and move, great skill and technique.
What Fergie as Big Sam fail to realise is that because we were never backed financially by the owners, it was hard to get a team to play successfully that way for a sustained period. We did develop a lot of teh talent in our Academy also part of teh West Ham way and now being recognised again at all cluns.
The mistake, aside from lack of investment, was the almost idealistic persuit of total football and West Ham teams with technical players but without the counter balance of some more physical and athletic competitors. Sure, we had Bonzo, Dicks and a few others over teh years but predominently went for lightweight technical players who teams "Up North" could bully and kick when that was allowed.
Fergie's experience of always beating West Ham was in an era after the West Ham way for the most part and besides his success over our club is in direct correlation to the valiue of the team. On other words, money for the most part.
In summary, Fergie talking about something he does not understand but such is his ignorance and arrogance that he does not realise he does not understand yet, at the same timee, believes he is an authority on because he won a lot of football trophies. Go back to the whiskey bottle and keep quiet !!

Money dominates the game these days, so it's much more difficult to play the West Ham way than it was in the 60s to 80s.
